I REALLY Like Your Peaches!

When I read that the name of the 1972 album, "Eat A Peach", was inspired by a sentiment expressed by Duane Allman (some suspect was a reference to T.S. Eliot’s "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock") in which he said “There ain't no revolution, it's evolution, but every time I'm in Georgia I eat a peach for peace; the two-legged Georgia variety” . . . I swooned.
a
Now that, my darling, is a true southern gentleman.
a
And when I read that he was so inspired by a Taj Mahal album (brought to him by his brother to cheer him up when he was sick) that he turned his Coriciden bottle into a slide, I began to think of the man whose passing Macon mourned five years before I was even born – as a kindred spirit.
a
This little peach loves poetry, Taj Mahal and southern boys with a swagger.
a
So, when invited to Food 101’s Allman Brothers inspired Peach Dinner, I got a little shiver just thinking about it. I’m telling you (tisk, tisk) – you should have come with. Chef Ron Eyster did things with those peaches that would have made you blush and his business partner, Chris, brought the swagger – in a perfectly fitted vintage tee and leather vest. I’m not a vest girl, per say, but this adorable fellow rocked it.
a
Back to the vittles: all six courses were divine! My favorites were the Buttermilk Fried Quail Breast with Riverview Farm Grits & the Jumbo BBQ Shrimp with Creamed Corn. Were it not for the watchful eyes of Suchita & Asha – I might just have run my finger across the plate for that last bit of creamed corn.  And, had the Quail been attached to a bone, one might have found me in the ladies room gnawing on it. But alas . . . I was chaperoned!
a
The rest of the week was set to the tune of a different era. It was a track from a time when I had leg warmers and I used to beg my mom (unsuccessfully) to dye my hair purple. A time when Red Lobster was considered fine dining, when “Kung Fu Fighting” was done at the disco rather than in an animated film . . . a time when we all just wanted someone to “pour some sugar on” us. That’s right, we hopped in the Delorean and headed back to the Eighties.
a
First stop: “THE” Red Lobster, as Jessica (Walden) refers to it. I’m not even going to try to explain. If you want to know why we were there (other than to eat cheese biscuits, drink “dirty” Shirley Temples and play with lobsters in the lobby) then you’ll just have to read the adorable TOAST that “sissy” wrote . . . it’s posted, so take a peek.
a
All aboard! On Friday, the girls (Jessica, Stephanie (Shadden) and April (Hornsby) picked “Miss Daisy” up for a little sushi & karaoke at Shoki. The private karaoke rooms are a scream and you just have to try the Banana Pudding Martini.
a
Afterwards we went to see Two Finger Jester - who played at Meagan (Evans) and Jessica’s 30th Birthday Eighties Prom. We rocked it out to hits such as Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” (Paul Hornsby – April’s daddy – produced and played keys on the tune.) A TOAST to Paul.
a
I ended the week at the most precious boy in the world's house (oh no, I can't, that's my secret) - playing wii golf - and I am ADDICTED . . . Tiger-Tiger, Tiger Woods Y'all !

One Very "Colorful" Tale

I’m only happy when it rains . . .

And thunderstorms are even more delicious. Ummm-mmm. There’s absolutely nothing like the spine-tingling crash of lightening and the sound of a hard rain beating down on the roof to make a girl a bit . . . “giddy.” So as I’m sure you can imagine, when Mother Nature whipped herself into a frenzy this week, I went right along with her.

I opened a bottle of wine from my trip to Riverside, California that I had forever been saving for a special occasion. I lit just enough candles so that I could still gaze deep into my MAN Friend’s sultry eyes. And we listened to the crash and boom of that spectacular thunderstorm as we made mad . . . passionate . . . mind blowing . . .

Oh I'm only teasing you, honey! I haven’t granted “MAN Friend” privileges to any of my current gentleman callers. But since I have peaked your interest - I want to tell you about a few things that I’m passionate about. I spent the past week in a series of meetings that lifted my bonnet a bit, letting some light in, and left me overcome with the burning desire to toot someone’s horn.

I joined fellow Macon Arts Board Members at Vineville Academy for an Arts Advocacy Breakfast in celebration of the Teachers from the Bibb County School System who will be spending part of their Summer vacation at the Bibb County Institute for the Arts.

Those attending will be connected with community artists, arts organizations & cultural groups and will learn how to creatively integrate the arts into daily lesson plans. A Toast to the participants, for putting their students learning experience ahead of spending the day in bed.
On Wednesday, I watched proudly as my darling Josh (Rogers) made a presentation to the Downtown Macon Rotary Club on historic preservation that was absolutely mesmerizing. If you are looking for a speaker to give your next meeting an edge, look no further than Josh. His intimate enthusiasm for preservation will make your heart skip a beat.

Then came Thursday, when Larry Schlesinger brought tears to my eyes with his empassioned pleas for the members of our community who have no “voice.” This evening, our City Council will vote on a resolution to ban the the carbon monoxide gas chamber for euthanizing animals (a process that is misleadingly called “putting them to sleep”) - -Larry, Nancy White & Erick Erickson need your support - - this is IMPORTANT.

Georgia outlawed gas chambers 18 years ago. They are barbaric and cruel . . . but we aren’t. If you’re like most of us, the love and affection that you get from that waggley tailed, cold nosed, furry friend, is something that you can count on . . . EACH and EVERY day, without fail and with awe-inspiring devotion. My dogs, Georgia & Gracie are my angels. But there are animals out there who don’t have monogrammed collars or painted doghouses, and they need us to stand up for them at the meeting. We can’t make sure that every “Tramp” finds his own “Jim Dear and Darling” but we can offer him a peaceful and dignified passing.
City Hall . . . six o’clock . . . please, PLEASE be there!

“Charlie, will I ever see you again? Sure you will, kid. You know goodbyes aren't forever. Then goodbye, Charlie. I love you. Yep . . . I love you too.”

Where The Wild Things Are

. . . The Oh So Very Wild
aa
My mother pulled into Town on Monday with her Airstream in tow. For those of you who don't know about Airstreams, check 'em out. They are super groovy.
a
Momma and I had a wonderful visit and I was a little choked up to see "the mothership" pull out onto The Circle and "on the road again."
a
On Thursday I joined the Walden friends and family for a press conference at Gateway Park and the naming & dedication of the I-16/Martin Luther King, Jr. interchange, in honor of the late Phil Walden. Under the bright Georgia sun, we stood witness to the most touching ceremony.
a
And under the season's hottest, or should I say "coolest," trend Jessica (Walden) and I, as the true fashionistas that we strive to be, worked on bringin' the sexy, and the parasol, right on back.
a
On Friday, I traveled to Warner Robins for the Museum of Aviation's ribbon cutting and reception to dedicate the new exhibit.  In attendance were David Thompson, Steve Kruger and Oliver Bateman. I have known Oliver for quite some time. And, in this case, the TOAST goes to his mother . . . who raised one of the finest boys I have ever known.
a
Later on I burned up a little more rubber on my way out to Bolingbroke.  I spent the night at Buck Head Plantation with Holly Doss, one of my very first friends.  The two of us passed the time as any other real live southern women would . . . having "licka" drinks on the back porch and catching up.  A couple of toddies later we "heard something" in the bushes.
a
A couple of Holly's "hey Mama"s later we were in the woods. I was toting a very large loaded firearm (for protection), Gail was toting a very large highbeam (to help us get a look at BigFoot) and Holly had little Gunner on her hip. Watch out for Granny Oakley & her bubbley banditos!
a
Saturday night, I joined the "Big Fat Walden Wedding Weekend" for a Par-Tay at Grants. That's right . . . Grant's Lounge.  Alan Walden "brought sexy back", Karla Redding-Andrews & her husband Tim showed us ALL how to dance, and I got to hear about the wedding from Jessica.
a
Jessica's cousin Amantha had been married to her true love, Nick, earlier in the evening at the Douglass Theatre. You can read all about it in The Times. Guests in attendance included The Washington Post's "Miss Manners" and Rap Artist T-Pain.
a
Jessica, George (Walden), Betsy (Stokes), Tosha (Walden) and the adorably tuxedo t-shirted & top hatted, T-Pain danced our little hearts out to a mix of old school and top forty that would make you weak in the knees.
a
We TOASTed each other with drinks mixed with Coca-cola Classic (no diet cola in this joint), we used cocktail napkins to dab away the dance fever induced "glow" on our faces and we smoked some Newport cigarettes! Oh my Momma would just be so proud.
a
To this day, I consider one of my only real claims to fame the fact that I went home with the Little Miss Bibb County tiara when both Holly and Jessica were my (quite formidable) opponents. I must have charmed the daylights out of those judges.
a
Anyhoo, I got to spend time with both of them this week. And what a week it was!

Less Becomes The "New" More

. . . Cosmos & Cupcakes

This past week began in STYLE . . . . . . at the City Club with Josh Rogers.
Perhaps one of the most dashing eligible bachelors in Macon - Josh is a tall, handsome, brilliant, seersucker donning, beautifully blue-eyed darling. In fact, were I a selfish girl, I wouldn’t even introduce him to you at all . . . keeping him all to myself would suit me just fine.

Josh and I hadn’t seen each other in a while but, fortunately, time cannot erase the Gatsby - - esque - - capades that make up our history so it was almost as if not one single minute had passed. We immediately stole away on the Veranda to catch up.

I would later have a giggle as I listened to a very perplexed voicemail from my co-toaster, Terrell, inquiring why I left (as he mistakenly thought I had). But it was worth it. A “sport” like Josh somehow always manages to make you realize just how desperately unfortunate all those poor fools who’ve ever broken your heart were to have lost you . . . and any single girl needs a little of that from time to time.

So you can imagine how, after “Celebrity Bartenders” Mike Ford & Steve Jukes buy the lady a drink or two and tell her that her new haircut makes her look like a young Cybill Shepherd, she could walk out of there floating on a cloud. You can meet me at the City Club any old time.

And that is just what Leigh Loyd did on Friday.

I wore a vintage blushed pearl collar necklace and a pair of petal pink Manolos to meet Leigh at the City Club for the Sex & the City Movie Premiere pre-party where I started out with a Samantha (Kettle One - very dirty) and followed it up with a Charlotte (Cosmo – very pink).
Our next stop was Natalia’s where I had the best Appletini in Macon and Leigh had her personal signature cocktail - the White Russian. By 9:45 we were standing in line to see the movie that, in some ways, I have waited my entire life to see.

I was not one teensy bit disappointed. The cinematically gorgeous film took our favorite characters to emotional depths that the wittily narrated 30 minute episodes had never been able to. I laughed and cried . . . with them - and well into the next day. And I left with a poignant realization that bids me to pass along this bit of advice:

Don't ever let anything get bigger than "big." The most important part of any fairytale is not the Ball, or the Gown, or even that the man beside you into the sunset is a "prince." The important thing is to find love and a "happy ending" wherever they may be.

When I was a little girl, I used to imagine that one day a boy would love me SO MUCH that he would buy me a GIGANTIC stuffed animal. It was that simple. I never imagined that he would be rich or tall or blonde or brunette. And to this day, Love (and perhaps a very large bear or puppy dog) is all that I am really looking for.

Keep it simple. Ask for what you really want . . . then let that be "enough." And see everything else for what it really is - the icing on the cupcake.
