Both Feet Planted Firmly In The Sand

By the time you read this, I’ll be watching the sun rise over Dungeness. And, having spent the weekend surf fishing along one of the most magnificent meanderings of coastline there is, napping in the porch swing at Plum Orchard, and strolling along Grande Avenue . . . I will have washed off some of the wear and tear of the world. I will have tossed a few of life’s obstacles into the sea like a message in a bottle bound for anyone or anything who intends to stand in my way. And if I’m very lucky . . . I will have cast a line into the surf and watched fresh catch sizzle over an open fire.

Sometimes the only thing left to do is “Go Fishin.” For me, that is true more often than not. It’s a cure all. From a stressful day, to a broken heart, to even the sort of anguish that Norman Maclean described when he wrote about a sermon that his father had given:
a
Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.”
a
Fishin’ is just about the closest to heaven I’ve ever been. And so I wanted to share with all of you some of my favorite quotations on the subject.
a
“The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.”
John Buchan (The Baron of my Historical Heart)
a
”Fishing is a . . . discipline in the equality of men - for all men are equal before fish.”
a
“I love fishing. You put that line in the water and you don't know what's on the other end. Your imagination is under there.”
a
“If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.”
Doug Larson, Columnist
a
“I'm fishing for men with a certain kind of bait, and the bait that I am offering is not a candy; it's a very specific thing that I'm offering, which is a deep gospel.”
a
“Hell, if I'd jumped on all the dames I'm supposed to have jumped on, I'd have had no time to go fishing”
a
“The only reason I ever played golf in the first place was so I could afford to hunt and fish.”
a
“Some of the best fishing ever done, was done without water, using only the printed word.”
Unknown
a
”It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.”
a
“You must lose a fly to catch a trout.”
a
“Creeps and idiots cannot conceal themselves for long on a fishing trip.”
a
“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.”
a
"There is certainly something in fishing that tends to produce a gentleness of spirit, a pure serenity of mind."
a
And of course . . .
a
“My father was very sure about certain matters pertaining to the universe. To him, all good things - trout as well as eternal salvation - came by grace; and grace comes by art; and art does not come easy.”
Norman Maclean
a
I hope that today is a lovely day for all of you! Thank you – Mr. C . . . "Mr. Cumberland" - for everything that you did to help make this happen.
