Risqué Resolutions, House Rules, & Lunar Landings!

So I’m looking at a blank slate. A blank slate that’s peering over at me to scream “do something already!” Two weeks into the new year, when most people have already broken all their well-penned resolutions, I’ve barely chicken-scratched mine onto the back of an unpaid bill. What’s a girl to do – or, should I say, resolve that she’s going to do?
a
My initial research has uncovered some rather risqué suggestions. And in the strangest of places – I might add. Arianna Huffington wants me to “Sleep My Way to The Top,” Doctor Mehmet Oz wants me to make S-E-X a priority, even Anderson Cooper wants to get me into the bedroom! Sorry kiddos, this lil’ Scarlett is very s-i-n-g-l-e, single, and won’t be making any promises that involve her pantalettes. Back to square one.
a
And then I heard the iconic gun slinging, Wild West echoing, showdown foreshadowing music playing - you know the tune. I bet you can even imagine the fiery sun setting, that you aren’t surprised to see a dark Stetson-clad shadow step into view. That’s right . . . there’s a new Sheriff in town! And it’s time to lay down the law.
a

House Rules: Adapted From One Of My Favorite “Saloons”
(2010 Resolutions)
a
Please refrain from using your cell phone from anything other than texting while in the bar area
a
No hovering, no fighting, no play fighting, no talking about fighting, no star-f***ing, no name-dropping, no shenanigans. Horseplay acceptable.
a
Please be patient, each cocktail is hand crafted, and takes a bit of time.
a
You must be seated to order a drink. No seat . . . no drink.
This is to ensure our servers can get your drinks in two shakes of a cocktail.
a
Enjoy the company you keep. Men must refrain from introducing themselves to women, unless invited or introduced by a friendly party.
a
Our dress code? Preserve the sexy.
a
Make love not war. No Jager bombs, Cosmos, Appletinis.
Although we do have some wonderful alternatives.
a
We are thrilled to accommodate parties of more than six,
although we kindly request you order your first round from our carafe menu.
a
So there, let’s raise our glasses. (In translation:) To laying down the law. To putting our cell phones down and listening to each other. To being kind & authentic. To patience. To taking the time to sit for a spell. To the “company we keep” . . . or choose not to. To expressing our dreams and desires through fashion. To Love - and trying new things. And to parties of six or more who share the “carafe.”
a
Yes let’s raise our glasses and make a toast . . . This Toast, THE TOAST, the first Toast of the year . . . is one that I would like to make to one of my heroes, Mary Elisabeth Plowden.
a
She thrived at Princeton. She put in the hours at Goldman Sachs. She survived September Eleventh - and then Wharton, and now California. And no matter how tough the going gets (and – in the world of Finance - I think that we can all appreciate the fact that it’s gotten pretty tough) she’s one of the tough who keeps on going. In an Industry where the climate can be described as hostile - at best, she is one of a handful (of women, especially) who have what it takes. And she shows up, and she “Brings It” . . . every day. Words like tenacity ring trite.
a
I was reminded of this, which inspired me to put my own Sheriffin’ Badge on, at a dinner party she hosted at her Parents house. MEP once told me that her Mother advised her to “shoot for the moon” and she would at least “land among the stars.” Now, I trust Mary Jo implicitly and not just because of the number of times I heard my own Mother explain “well Mary Jo Plowden says . . . “ And it seems to me that her daughter is just about ready for a lunar landing – so Here! Here!
a
In 2010, I resolve, to cheer as loudly as is socially acceptable
as Mary Elisabeth Plowden makes a “giant leap” for Womankind.
a
And I resolve . . . to make a few “small steps” myself.

A Slice Of Heaven On The Menu

. . . Tastes Pretty Good To Me
a
I've already gotten everything that I really wanted for my birthday - and I'm not talking gifts!
a
On Wednesday night, I kicked off a week of festivities at Miss J's. If you missed the Joseph Ribkoff Sample Sale - you simply missed out. I did not and sweet Jessica (Walden) remembered how much I love horsey hummus and wrapped some up for me. GREAT FRIENDS . . . check!
a
On Friday, I pulled a Celine Dion & "drove all night." This Nashville bound trek was quite a feat for "Miss Daisy" but worth every panic stricken, "I'm going to die" minute . . . the weekend to follow was filled with the sweet LAUGHTER that I had asked for . . . check!
a
Birthday Eve began with a little puppy love and ended with a "3" way! Ha-ha '-) Gotcha . Perhaps I should explain . . .
a
The Gentleman and I enjoyed Steak Scramble & Huevos Cubano at Fido, an adorable pet store turned coffee house. And later on, he whisked me off to a most romantic dinner at Midtown Cafe - where I had Veal "3" Ways: Piccata, Oscar & Saltimbocca. And I must say . . . that my "3" way was utterly divine.
a
Sunday, I had the perfect "Happy Birthday Baby."
a
It was a rather unconventional one for me. There were no feather boas, no karaoke, no sparklers or fanfare. But I can say, with absolute confidence, that it will always be one of my very favorites.
a
I opened the most thoughtful gifts, ate "birthday queso" from SATCO, drank draft beer, watched football and laughed again & again & again . . . at everything from the big burley man who extended his pinkie finger every time he took a big ol' gulp of his beer (jest like he was havin' tea with the queen) to the quite flattering attention that we were both getting from the other patrons (it was like we were prom King & Queen).
a
But we weren't THE Toast of Broadway Brewhouse . . . No sir, that goes to the chili and a little glass of heaven they call the Bushwacker. It's a Frosty - all grown up. You know, like the little girl with the red pigtails has a wild side. The whole thing was like a gourmet & grown-up version of the classic Wendy's pairing.
a
I checked DRAMA & PASSION off the list on Monday. Play rehearsal at Theatre Macon was followed with "Readings by Michelle" on Cherry Street with Misty (Churchwell), Brooke (Futch), Amber (Whitley), Erin (Ferrell), Katy (Bailey) & Betsey (Brindger).
a
What about FAMILY? You ask. Well you should know by now that I always save the best for last. The Toast of this week's festivities, was listening to my mom help little Tucker sing Happy Birthday to me on the phone. Check.

On The Road Again

. . . "Insisting That The World Be Turnin' Our Way - And Our Way"
a
What better excuse could there be for a road trip than an eco-chic party? My thoughts exactly!
a
First Stop: Laura Turner Seydel's EcoManor. Lunch by Six Beans & Persimmon Creek Vineyards, absolute paper HEAVEN by Verde Paperie & Forties Forward, and Jewels by Smart Glass.
a
After forming a rather sizeable Christmas/Birthday list, it was "On The Road Again" . . . add a dash of scootin' up 75 and a gorgeous leafy swirl of breathtaking mountain views on 24 and, before we knew it, the Gentleman and I were strolling the streets of Nashville.
a
If Macon is a great place to be from then Nashville is . . . a great place to eat breakfast! Saturday at Loveless Motel & Cafe, Sunday at Marche and Monday at Pancake Pantry. But the TOAST, of breakfast in Nashville, goes to none other than the Southern Gentleman that sat across from me at these stellar breakfast joints.
a
You see . . .
a
Sunday morning we arrived at Marche where I immediately pressed my nose to the sweets window and, salivating over chai infused creme brulee, was oblivious to anyone and everyone around us. My concentration momentarily broken by something or other, I turned around to speak to him. When I did, my heart ached with such adoration that it nearly lept from my chest.
a
There was a woman putting her wallet back in her purse and balancing a baby boy on her hip. And the cashier was holding a tray of Halloween cookies out for her to take. And my gentleman was reaching for the tray and saying to the mother "I'll get these . . . you're holding something far more precious."
a
As he carried the tray of ghosts and goblins out to her car, a lump formed in my throat and my eyes watered a teensy bit and I wondered how any Toast that I could ever write would do the moment any justice? The gesture was one that was so sincere, so instinctual to him and so simple & lovely at the same time. I was proud to be with him . . . to say the very least.
a
The weekend was delicious all the way around! Atelier, one of the Artisan Shops at Loveless was DIVINE. It tops my list of shops where I could "wrap it all up" and have nothing to return. Rumba, a fabulous little restaurant recommended by G. Scott Walden, takes the cake where small plates are concerned and the drinks are an Adventure.
a
A late night stroll through the Vanderbilt campus even made me question my aversion to formal education. Huh? And the downtown neighborhood bars are riddled with character, especially my favorite (the name presently escapes me) where I could have sworn I was mere yards from the ocean.
a
I have to admit . . . I have never been so (UN)happy to be home. Stay tuned because . . . "Like a band of gypsies - I just cain't wait ta get on the road again!"
