Saint Stanislaus & The Holy Cross

. . . Dear Saint Stanislaus

When I was a little girl, a trip to the doctor was always a real production. From my mother’s fear of needles (and insistence that my sister and I not be subjected to them) to my own fear that something exciting would happen in the neighborhood while we were gone, it’s a wonder that we ever made it at all. But with a little teamwork, we managed to arrive for scheduled visits and Dr. Bob always gave us a lollipop to suck on as we wiped the salty tears from our faces.

I don’t take mom to the doctor anymore and they don’t give out candy to “Big Girls.” Something I had to learn to live without when I turned sixteen and was informed that I couldn’t go to the pediatrician anymore. Horrors! Ever since, I’ve been on my own. So, minus said lollipop, I headed to Fountain of Juice after my checkup on Tuesday. One smoothie and oatmeal cream pie later, I wasn’t even thinking about the boo boo on my arm.

I continued my quest for health and wellness at Allyson Moody’s house on Thursday. We had salmon on toast points, artichokes and (my famous) kitchen sink remoulade, coconut milk soup and a salad that was fan-freakin-tastic! Afterwards we were treated to a presentation on spring cleaning the gunk from our pantries – and our bodies – and I emerged feeling much more wise and savvy than I had been earlier in the day. Juice Plus has managed to take the overwhelming anxiety out of getting your daily dose of fruits & veggies. I'm in.

Friday night I put everything I learned about health and wellness on the back burner and joined the Full Monty cast for a party at Gail Johnson’s. Gail puts “the decadence” into any party spread and one begins to feel that, much like a goldfish, they might just eat enough that they will float, belly up, to the top of the bowl.

On Saturday, I moved it on into the kitchen - Bonnie Star’s kitchen to be exact. Bonnie is so talented & lovely and was so very complimentary of my performance as Twink in Dearly Beloved that I found it hard not to blush. If you missed taking a peek at her exquisite kitchen - you truly missed out. My cohorts and I played with puppies, flirted with policemen and gabbed our way through this year’s Le Tour shift. By far - the low point of the experience was watching women drag their husbands through kitchens on such a beautiful day, mere paces from the golf course. Poor dears! My shift was over before I knew it and I was on my way to the Saint Stanislaus Day Neighborhood Street Party.

The party was quite a treat! Joellen Spivey, Seth Bush, our own Terrell Sandefur and crew outdid themselves, to say the least. "Best dressed" goes to Anna and Ellie Mincey. Their tutu’s were just precious and they looked like little pink confections. Adorable! "Mr. & Mrs. Congeniality" goes to their parents David and Tracie, who are always so warm and friendly. Members of the Polar Bear Club (those brave enough to jump in Terrell’s pool) include Jack Jenkins, Amy Hellis, Charley Hellis and me.

The after-party was a triple threat. The John Spivey Tuna Steaks, the Barbara Jenkins Special Sauce and the Jack Jenkins Home Brew were enough to make me woozy with epicurean pleasure. Enjoying these delights as well were: Joellen, Anna Stripling, Hal & Jill McSwain, and Robin & Rob Craig.

Saint Stanislaus
shall go right next to Saint Christopher in my heart. His affinity for healing and commitment to making each day perfect has given me so many reasons to smile.
