Jingle & Humm

. . . Of The The Holiday Belles

This particular First Friday was a very special one for my dear friend Amy. So I arrived downtown uncharacteristically early to celebrate the opening of Macon Arts “Exploring Landscapes – Real & Imagined: Paintings by Daly Smith and Ceramics by Amy Hellis.” The show was amazing! The crowd was oh so front-row-shoulder-to-shoulder. And I made a darling new friend.

Joining me in a Toast to Amy was Christy Bush. Also an artist . . . Christy's portrait series “Soundtrack to Nothing”, a two-year documentary project, explores the intimate world of teenagers in love with music. The exhibition is complimented by a recording project of Sam Fogarino (Christy’s husband) and Dagon James in collaboration with Swervedriver's Adam Franklin, Grasshopper of Mercury Rev, and Michael Stipe.

I was so excited to see Rose Lane Leavell. How she ever leaves that little slice of Shangri-La called Charlane, I’ll never know. But I will tell you that fashion do’s and don’ts were certainly in her wake Friday night. Of particular note - a veritable “cornucopia” of outer wear: Beth Dunwody in an exquisite vintage fur and C. Terry Holland in . . . well . . . to tell you the truth I’m at a loss for words.

Let’s just say that the puff paint embellished acid washed denim set the tone for my daddy’s 60th birthday party. A little soiree that I like to call “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Lit like a Christmas Tree.”

Saturday night I dashed down to Savannah for the festivities. No sooner had I powdered my nose than “what to my wandering eyes should appear” but a 73 year old woman in a wedding dress with a press-on pregnancy. This one detail pretty much wraps up any description of the party - I'll leave the rest to your very colorful imaginations. Ahhh Savannah! Happy Birthday Daddy.

Before heading back to Macon for “Christmas Belles” tech rehearsal, I asked my dad’s wife, Marcia, about the get-up. “Oh that was her Halloween costume” she explained nodding and - as if it all made sense – she added “she had so much fun wearing it then that she decided to wear it to your father’s party.” When my grandmother added “well she had oranges stuffed in the bosom and they must have gotten warm in there because she smelled quite lovely” I took a second sniff at the sweet tea that I was drinking.

Now . . . if you think all that sounds hilarious, meet me at Theatre Macon for Christmas Belles, you won’t be disappointed!
