I've always been especially gifted in the "question and answer segment of the program." Members of the Sanders family have many times over uttered the words "Ashley's getting ready to put her gloves on" during a long night of board games.
And when I recently questioned Jackie Waters on the reasoning for my B performance as a student at Stratford, I received the loveliest compliment. "The answer always came to you so quick" she said.
And then, as she usually does, she made me laugh at myself in a way that sometimes only she can. "Then you would turn around and start talking to Milly. All I ever saw were those big bows and the back of your head."
This week a tidbit of history from the entertainment industry gave me cause for the most delightful little squeal. Do you know what the original name for the Ed Sullivan show was? Drum roll please . . .
Toast of the Town!
That's right. The television show that ran weekly for over two decades in the same time slot, started out as a Toast. Clink, clink!
"There is nothing, Sir, too little for so little a creature as man. It is by studying little things that we attain the great art of having as little misery and as much happiness as possible” advised Samuel Johnson . . . a quote that greets you on the Schott's Miscellanies homepage. If you're inclined to agree, these books are a must! I received Schott's Original Miscellany as a birthday present and I'm absolutely hooked on the hardback treasure that Newsweek calls "as hilarious as it is addictive." I can't wait to read the 2009 volume!
When the nights are as cold as they have been lately, there's nothing - to me - quite as comforting as a fluffy down blanket, a tad bit of bourbon, a pretty fire and a good read.
And when that read is my next discovery . . . hold onto your horses . . . I'm smitten! Smitten with a quarterly periodical that I discovered on my last trip to the bookstore - Lapham's. The historical literary collage, dedicated each issue to one particular subject, is just too exquisite for words.
Oh I could just go on . . . and on . . . and on even further. Instead, why don't you pick up a copy for yourself? Sarah Bernhardt, Tolstoy, Ben Franklin and a host of others will certainly not disappoint you.
As for me . . . well I'll be in front of a fire with Mr. Lapham & Mr. Schott!
