A Grand 'Ol Time

Last Wednesday I had a hot date!

Leigh, Josh & Baby-Girl-On-The-Way Loyd picked me up for dinner and a show - The Macon Civic Club's 48th Annual Musical Revue, "Opry at the Grand."

The name of the show set the stage for the adorable costumes and the musical selections that delighted my fellow audience members. (I got a little bit sentimental over the Hee-Haw skits . . . I used to watch Hee-Haw with my Grandfather, Boppa. Those times will always be one of my fondest memories.) However, had the show been named for the talent that we were treated to that evening, it more likely would have been called "To Catch A Thief" at the Grand.

The show was first stolen by David Mincey! His performance of "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down" gave me chill bumps. A tip of the hat was definitely in order. And then what do you know? Matt Jerles "Mr. Big", Erin Bickley "Nurse Morningwood" and "The Limp Sticks" stole it right back . . .

Albert Edge and friends wowed the crowd with a choreographed, hospital gown clad chorus that made me squeal with laughter. The Rockettes can put on a show . . . but I have never before seen anything nearly as delightful as the walker-toting step ball changes that these fellows gave us.

But the most exquisite "thief" of the evening was the divine Nan Solomon. Her performance of "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue", a touching serenade in memory of Don Beaty, was breathtaking. Listening to Nan sing is like curling up by a warm fire. It's as if her sweet soul reaches right out and wraps all the way around you.

Snaps must also be given to Walter Moody & Chris Wilson (as Bo & Luke Duke), Johnny Walker & Allison Sellers (for their mad dain-cin' skills) and Robert Stribling (for his impeccable fashion-forwardness.)

I can say, without hesitation, that this was the finest Civic Club show I have ever seen. A heartfelt thanks to all of you for entertaining me so completely.
